Pros:        Vivid colours, sharp wide open and stopped down, excellent working distance, wonderful focusing helicoid
Cons:        tiny little bit of fringing - can be removed in PP with some effort

This lens is an amazing piece of engineering. It is an excellent macro (1:1) as others have raved about. It provides fantastic working distance for those tricky subjects such as spiders, particularly jumping spiders. Colours are superb, natural but with a nice vibrant lift. Sharpness is there from wide open with DOF not too punishing like 50mm lenses can be. Best of all, this lens can be stopped down a loooong way without diffraction damaging IQ.

I have also used this lens for distant portraits. Surprisingly, the lens gives a wonderful 3D effect owing to the narrower FoV and simply stunning OoF Bokeh. The 200mm allows for subject isolation in crowded spaces giving the impression of intimacy when it is not really there. I used this feature to great effect by snapping candid portraits without the subject knowing.

IQ loss is almost negligible when used with a quality teleconverter turning the lens into a 300mm. I would like to try the Pentax AF teleconverter to see what is offers.

Focusing on subjects at medium to long distances is very easy through tiny finger tip twists of the focusing helicoid, while macro subjects are dealt with through effortless yet pronounced focusing adjustments giving a sense of control - although movements are never overly involved (some adjustments on other lenses can take an uncomfortably long time to adjust when close focusing). The tripod mount is perfectly designed as a focusing aid when hand held shooting. The mount sits nicely in the palm of my hand while I toggle the focusing helicoid with gentle fingertip control.

There is some fringing evident and when it emerges can take some effort to remove in PPing. Not overly distracting but noticeable. Perhaps the only negative. I have market it down in that regard.

The lens costs a lot of money and is a very serious investment. Not having the benefit of testing the lens prior to purchase was a significant barrier to making a $2000 investment - BUT - I took the leap of faith and glad I did. This lens will be with me till the end, then, hopefully, enjoyed by my children. It is heir loom quality - no doubt about that.

Bought this lens in mint condition from a pentax fan & collector after testing it.
It had a lot of bad reviews and when i could finally start using it, i didn't understand why.
I once had a big old sigma ex dg 24mm 1.8, on APS-C, and it was a cool OK lens before it dissapeared with my bag in a train.

The Pentax FA* 24mm 2 is in another league. On full frame it is completely superior to the sigma on aps-c in terms of sharpness.
This lens is one of the reasons i didn't buy the pricy ltd 31mm 1.8. Because this wide angle is as sharp.
And AF is tremendously fast. And i'm in love with it's bokeh, it empasizes the subject in a lovely particular way.
Yes, there's fringing , CA, wide open. So? what other lens doesn't wide open ?
Yes, you can't shoot a perfect landscape with super sharp borders wide open. And it's great central sharpness will always look sharper than the borders at f4.
But well focused, subjects in corners at f2 are not blurry, nor unsharp. They have an OK sharpness even considering a 36MP sensor.

Shooting with this kind of wide angle requires of course much more skill and time to aprehend than a 50mm .
Not only there's much more pixel data for pixel peepers, but the compositions are larger, and more difficult to acknowledge.

A 35mm takes time to tame well. For this one, double the time. Once you've tamed it you'll appreciate it. Don't always trust testers like photozone.de that have the lens for a little while. Better trust the guys that designed and constructed the lens +20 years ago, and the number of pro shooters that used it.

I've been using this lens a few months and it has become my main lens for almost everything. I love the IQ this lens offers in all the apertures. The only bad thing that can be said is that is a bit too soft at 70mm, f2.8 when the subject is at minimum focus distance (about 30cm, not 43), but this only affects if you use it as a pseudo macro lens for plants or flowers (and even in this scenario, is very rare that you use f2.8 instead of 5.6 or even 8).
The Power Zoom function isn't supported by our modern digital SLR cameras, but if you have a film one like the Pentax PZ-1p is a good extra. If you don't, it only adds weight. Edit: I must correct myself, because Power Zoom works since you move the barrel and it moves the zoom like in a compact camera, but not some automatisms based on Power Zoom.
I must say that the rotating front element is not as bad as it sounds, the only effect is that using filters like polarizers or Cokin become a bit difficult.

Description:
The SMC Pentax-FA* 80-200mm F2.8 ED [IF] is the fastest lens Pentax has ever produced for this zoom range. It is quite heavy because it employs an all-metal barrel and includes the Power Zoom feature, which can be taken advantage of on modern Pentax DSLRs as well as select film bodies. This lens also features a tripod collar.

Lovely lens! Heavy, silver, 2.8 and sharp.
And now that the Pentax D-FA* 70-200mm is delayed it was an even better decision. Half the price and available on Ebay...:-)
Its front heavy and the tripod foot is a bit too short for my taste...
AF is quick on the K-3 (even BIF works great), much more than on the other two bodies...
I do like the Power Zoom it's a shame that they have not followed this route.. they have used the power zoom contacts for the SDM and DC AF....

I have started to carry this lens together with the DA 12-24, FA* 28-70, DA100 Macro WR in my backpack every day... its a heavy kit but worth the schlepping... (Bike, Walk and Train)
This is my high IQ Zoom Kit... was hard to carry in the beginning but its a good training...:-) and I don't feel the weight anymore. And I can spot something during the train ride and go there by bike and capture almost everything.. It even allows me to take Wildlife, like the birds below. It's harder than with the DA* 300 or Fa* 400 as you need to get fairly close...:-) but you have a F2.8 gain for speed... the best camera is the one you have with you :-)

Like all current DA lenses, the SMC Pentax DA* 50-135mm is designed only for Pentax APS-C DSLR cameras. It was announced in late February, 2007. It auto-focuses with an SDM ultrasonic motor on the K10D (firmware 1.30) and newer cameras. On older cameras the lens will auto-focus with the 'screw drive' mechanism.

This is probably the best APS-C lens that Pentax have ever made. Nothing else comes close in providing the utility or quality that this lens provides. The colour, sharpness and bokeh are amazing. Like one reviewer put it, this lens makes a mediocre snapper look like a great one.

I've had five copies of this lens, all used. Three out of five have had SDM issues but all of these were easily fixed by opening up the lens and massaging the motor. Tutorials can be readily found for this procedure.

The copy that I now use exhibited a squealing motor as well as sluggish response to autofocus so I converted it to screwdrive using my K100d. Again, a procedure that is well documented. Autofocus is now much more responsive.

In all, this is the one lens I'd pick if I could only have one. It's equivalent to 70-200 on full frame so it's really not wide at all, but the images produced are out of this world. Ignore the autofocus issues. Screwdrive is worth the extra tiny bit of noise if your SDM motor dies. This lens is THAT good.

I find the DA* 16-50 to be a fantastic lens ( now ). When I first got this lens I thought that I had got a " bad " copy. The only thing that was " bad " was my technique in using it. Very fast lenses and lots of megapixels highlight flaws in hand held camera technique very quickly. I found some of my images were tack sharp and others with some blur. It would have been too easy to blame the lens. Once I got my head around the large drop in depth of field from 50mm to 16mm at f2.8 from the same shooting distance, my keeper rate of photographs improved. Practicing good shutter release technique improved my keeper rate more again. The SDM problems that this lens has had in the past was not a deterrent for me getting it. If my SDM stops working, I will get it repaired. The fear of it breaking down did not prevent me from getting it. I would have missed out on some valuable to me photographs if I had l had let the prospect of SDM failure cloud my thoughts. All the DA* lenses are quality items. I can highly recommend the 16-50.

Pros:        Sharpness, bokeh, design
Cons:        Purple fringing at max aperture, AF can hunt
New or Used: Used    Camera Used: K-5 IIs, K-01

I bought this for its field of view on APS-C and all my experience is on APS-C cameras. It works well for me as a compact short telephoto prime. I do use it for portraits, but I also find it generally useful for landscape and architecture in some cases. For what it’s worth, mine is a “Made in Japan” version with a low serial number, bought second hand two years ago.

Good things start to happen when I get this lens out. I often hear that buying gear won’t make you a better photographer, but somehow pictures that I know would look dull with my other lenses look special with this lens. I think it is partly that the field of view is quite restrictive so it makes me think harder about what I’m doing. Also, the sharpness of the in-focus areas and the beautiful nature of the bokeh in front and behind that give the images a special look. The lens itself is very nicely made, and I particularly like the built-in hood that slides out.

One thing to be careful of is purple fringing, which can be quite prominent, but it improves if stopped down just a little, where the bokeh is still nice. The other issue is the autofocus, which seems to be OK with the CDAF on my K-01, but hunts a lot on my K-5 IIs. There are some other modern conveniences that are lacking from this lens, like quick shift, silent focusing and the latest coatings. But I feel like the whole ethos of the limited line is to make beautiful lenses the way they used to be made, so I don’t object to these characteristics too much, and just love the lens for what it excels at.

First of all, I like the focal length a lot, 28mm is a bit wide and 35mm sometimes is not wide enough for me. 31mm is perfect on the FF for me.

Not razor sharp below f2, but still pretty good, perfect for portrait. Once you step down to 2.8 the sharpness jumps to a different level.

Rendering of this lens is just special, not as contrasty as the ZK 35 but the overall feeling is slightly better than the ZK .Another great thing about this lens is that it's sharp at all distant,so you can use it for landscape, street shooting and portrait, not like my M28mm f2 , which is great at close distant but not so good at infinity.

Last but not least, the bokeh. IMHO the 31mm produces the best bokeh I've seen from a wide angle lens, the transition from in focus area to OOF area is so smooth.

Cons:it's not cheap and I wish it can be a little smaller just like the 43&77, it would be great to add WR in the future.
Overall, this is probably my favorite Pentax lens.

The Pentax FA 43mm limited is a standard prime lens featuring a metal construction and superior optics.

Pros:        fast enough, compact, solid, sharp from 1.9, bokeh is smooth
Cons:        no Q-shift (obvious),
Sharpness: 10    Aberrations: 10    Bokeh: 10    Autofocus: 9    Handling: 9    Value: 9    New or Used: New    Camera Used: K-3, K-30

PROS:
1- after AF adjustment it is sharp wide open (f/1.9-2) and very sharp from f/2.8. at f/1.9 it is sharper than my DA 40/2.8 stopped down to f/4.
2- fast enough, I can use it wide open at f/1.9 instead at the past I was needed to stop-down my DA 40 to the f/3.2-f/4 to get SO sharp image. Almost 2 full stops faster (in terms of IQ, not the exposition)
3- very nice and smooth bokeh. previous bokeh from DA 40/2.8 was not always good enough.
4- front cover attached on the very compact hood.

CONS:
1- no Q-shift (it is known, but this option is very useful at DA lens), it is not really issue.
2- not to fast AF, but fast enough. Yes, it is slower than DA 40, but only in comparison.

HD Lens coating
SMC เรื่มใช้เมื่อ 1960
HD Coating เริ่มใช้เมื่อ 2012 แล้ว ดียังไง  ลดlight loss, ลด reflex of light on elements surface,ซึ่งมีผลทำให้  flare ลดลง, ghostingลดลง,contrastเพิ่มขึ้น

Pentax have just announced a facelift of their entire DA-Limited lens lineup, as optically-improved and cosmetically-redesigned "HD" versions of the DA 15, 21, 35, 40, and 70mm Limited lenses will soon be replacing the current DA-Limited lenses.  All of the new "HD" lenses will be available in both black and silver, and their glass has been treated with Pentax's new HD coating, a nano crystal lens coating that does a better job of reducing ghosting and flare than traditional multi-coatings.  In the past, silver versions of DA limited lenses were only offered as special editions.
The aperture diaphragm in all the new lenses also getting an upgrade: their aperture blades will now employ a fully-rounded design.

Pros:        Built qualitiy, size, starburst, low distortion, pictures makes you to screw up the eyes from pleasure
Cons:        Could be sharper, works only in crop mode on FF
Sharpness: 9    Aberrations: 10    Bokeh: 8    Autofocus: 10    Handling: 10    Value: 10    New or Used: Used    Camera Used: K-5

As soon as i bought my first DSLR (K5 with a kit lens) back in 2012 i wanted to have a good wide/super wide angle lens for landscapes, as it is my main interest in photography.
At first i had a possibility to buy few quite rare soviet MF m42 lenses (MIR 20 M 3.5/20 and MC Zenitar 2,8/16) and i've used them about half of the year. The pictures they produced didn't met my expectations (soft, lots of unwanted artefacts, aberations) so i sold them without a hesitation.
Then i started to read reviews in this forum about SMC Pentax-DA 15mm F4 ED AL Limited. One by one. Checked the pictures here and on Flickr. At that time i was always checking local second hand lens market, and luckily for me there was one copy of my wish listed lens.
Currently, i'm using it more than 4 years and from my point of view all the good things that has been said about it here is truth. A true gem!

I'm using it also during weddings and other shoots. I had couple of accidents because of clumsiness, dropped it on the pavement from like one meter high.. Thanks for pentax limited lenses built quality it is working perfectly.

The lens is the best companion while traveling, add gorilla pod focus tripod and you have the most light weighted, super quality set for landscapes. I prefer long exposure (for this i use B+W ND 110 filter + Carl Zeiss T* circular polarizer + pentax remote control F) and you need only to set focus to infinity in MF mode, find a right composition -> stunning pictures.
